Today, I have the pleasure of making cooking fun for kids in the kitchen on Living Dayton!

My husband and I grew up heavy as kids. We’ve both been able to lose 50 pounds and have maintained a healthy lifestyle for 8 years now. One of the ways that we are helping our kids develop healthy habits is to let them help us in the kitchen. Statistics show that if you get your kids involved in the cooking or shopping process, they are more likely to try things.

Another mom health hack that I do is use a few familiar ingredients and pair it with unfamiliar ingredients. It’s as simple as swapping out white bread with organic whole wheat toast (Klosterman Bakery bread has some great options); regular peanut butter with all natural peanut butter; and sugar with honey. Plus, it’s always helpful to use one of their favorite fruits: Bananas!

These two recipes will really get your kids excited about eating healthy. The first one is a dessert toast. I recommend this for a once in a while treat, since it uses nutella. The second recipe is an everyday breakfast item as long as you keep the healthy fats and honey in check. After all, peanut butter is so yummy and it’s easy to use too much!

I hope you and your family enjoy these recipes and make them a new part of your family routine!

Banana and Nutella Dessert Toast

Ingredients:

1 loaf of Klosterman Organic Whole Wheat Bread
3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Nutella
2 large bananas, sliced
Drizzle of honey (optional)

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400ºF.

Brush the melted butter on both sides of each slice of bread then arrange the slices on a baking sheet.
Bake the bread for 5 minutes, flip each slice over and bake an additional 3 to 5 minutes until toasted. Remove the bread from the oven and set it aside to cool slightly.

Once the bread has cooled, spread a portion of the Nutella on one side of each slice of toast. Top the Nutella with a few sliced bananas and, if necessary, drizzle with your favorite honey. Serve.

Peanut Butter Banana Bread (from Sarah Manaresi’s Kitchen)

4 slices of Klosterman Organic Whole Wheat Bread
2 tsp. of salted butter
1-2 tsp. of raw honey
1/2 tsp. of cinnamon
2 ripe bananas, sliced
All-natural peanut butter

Toast the bread to your desired doneness.

Melt butter and combine with honey and cinnamon over medium-high heat for about 2-3 minutes. Add in sliced bananas and cook on each side until caramelized (about 2-3 minutes a side).

Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on each piece of toast. Add bananas on top. Drizzle with honey. Serve.
